The 9th Art Recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Brussels-Capital Region

In May 2024, the Art of Comics was officially added to the inventory of intangible cultural heritage of the Brussels-Capital Region!

This recognition is significant, marking the second acknowledgment of the patrimonial and cultural importance of the 9th art, following a similar decision by Geneva. Thanks to the collaboration between Urban and its many partners, Brussels has become one of the internationally recognised capitals of the 9th art.

This status is rooted in the influence of iconic figures such as Franquin, Vandersteen, Jacobs, and Hergé, whose Adventures of Tintin achieved worldwide fame, helping Belgian comics flourish on the global stage. Brussels has long been a hub for comic book publishing, production, and education, continuing to attract authors and illustrators from around the world. Culturally, the region is brimming with treasures: the Comics Art Museum, various exhibitions, and dedicated events all contribute to preserving and transmitting the expertise and heritage of this art form.

Additionally, the famous Comic Strip Route, with over 70 murals integrated into the urban landscape, offers a unique experience for residents and visitors alike, stretching from the city centre to neighbouring municipalities.

With this inscription, comics join other emblematic elements of Brussels' identity, such as the art of string puppetry, carillon culture, the Saint-Guidon procession, the living tradition of funfairs, as well as culinary traditions like fries, speculoos, and beer culture, alongside events like the Brussels Pride. A vibrant tribute to the 9th art, a pillar of Brussels' culture and a vector for its international renown.
