On August 19th, 2024, a first list of trees included in the legal inventory of remarkable trees was published in the Belgian Official Journal (Belgisch Staatsblad/Moniteur belge). They are now part of Brussels’ “small heritage” and can therefore be granted subsidies for certain interventions.
→ The principle: only those interventions that are necessary for the proper conservation of the tree are eligible. Normal maintenance is excluded from the support and remains the responsibility of the owner.
Urban sets the terms and conditions for the subsidy, namely:
- a preliminary visit to the site to determine what is really needed and how it should be done to benefit the tree;
- the exceptional nature of the intervention;
- the competence of the arborist (European Tree Worker certification or an equivalent certification).

But what is a remarkable tree?
In the Brussels-Capital Region, a remarkable tree is designated as such after a diagnosis by Urban’s specialists. This diagnosis is based on the tree’s heritage value, which must itself meet a set of criteria defined by Urban. These criteria are both scientific and aesthetic (e.g. observed size, rarity of the species, isolation criterion, etc.).
