Brussels’ heritage goes abroad: Learn more about “Zadkine Art Deco” in Paris

“La danse”, a plaster bas-relief by Ossip Zadkine which decorated the proscenium arch of Cinéma Métropole and has been invisible to the public for over 30 years, has been 3D scanned at Urban’s request. This digital version of the bas-relief can be seen as part of the "Zadkine Art Deco" exhibition, which opened on 15 November in Paris at the Musée Zadkine.

The plaster bas-relief created in 1933 by French artist of Belarussian origin Ossip Zadkine to decorate the proscenium arch of Cinéma Métropole has been inaccessible to the public for over 30 years. The bas-relief is currently hidden in the storerooms of a ready-to-wear shop in Rue Neuve 30 in Brussels.

In 2020 SA Métropole, which also owns the hotel of the same name, donated the bas-relief to the Brussels Capital Region on the condition that it be made accessible to the public by moving it from its current location.

The project to showcase the work “outside the walls” has not yet come to fruition, but Urban took the first step in presenting it to the public by 3D scanning the bas-relief to make it accessible, if only virtually.

The 3D scanning operation has been entrusted to RealVisuals in December 2024.

This approach allows the work to be showcased virtually, for the benefit of art lovers and researchers.

These documents are now on display at the exhibition in the Musée Zadkine in Paris devoted to the artist’s works in connection with Art deco. The exhibition particularly highlights Zadkine’s sculptures designed for architectural purposes: on several occasions Zadkine has collaborated with architects to decorate monuments, in Paris as well as in Brussels. The bas-relief that he conceived for Cinéma Métropole in Brussels is considered to be his most impressive work in terms of scale. Through the digital copy commissioned by Urban, it is now placed in the context of the artist’s work.
