This issue invites you to discover the “Objects and collections” that make up the region’s movable heritage: an extraordinarily rich and varied collection, spread across the whole Brussels area.
Ten years after taking on its new competencies in this field, the Region shares its views on the challenges involved in managing, conserving and promoting this specific heritage, and sets out its ambitions for the future.

Why does Urban publish?
Urban’s publishing policy is closely linked to its public service mission and its land management tasks.
Since 2018, this policy had the following objectives:
- raising public awareness of the urban environment by communicating its history and evolution;
- sharing the knowledge Urban’s work has produced with the regional stakeholders and with a wider public;
- contributing to Urban’s brand image and to its fundamental mission of raising the Region’s profile.
These objectives are pursued through a range of publications organised into a few main collections. Recently, two new collections, “#Urban Research” (2020) and “Heritage of Tomorrow” (2021) have been added to the three main collections that existed already and are still “active”: “Bruxelles Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (Brussels, city of art and history), “Bruxelles Patrimoines” (Brussels Heritage) and “Histoire & Restauration” (History and Restoration).
The “Bruxelles Patrimoines” magazine
The “Bruxelles Patrimoines” magazine (Brussels Heritage) discusses the region’s multifaceted heritage from an interdisciplinary perspective. History, techniques and heritage management, but also incorporating heritage into urban planning, are all covered in thematic sections. Through the magazine, Urban shares its thoughts and expertise on current urban issues.
Publishing this magazine makes it possible to:
- highlight and promote Urban’s heritage management tasks and professions, past and future;
- share the knowledge developed while carrying out the administration’s mission;
- promote and disseminate specific know-how and working methods.
The Brussels movable heritage inventory
For more than 10 years, Urban has been exercising new powers in the field of cultural heritage and has played a key role in preserving our regional heritage. Since 2014, the Region has been officially responsible for conserving, managing and promoting the movable and intangible heritage in its territory.
Thanks to the work of Urban’s teams and numerous partners, over 20,000 objects from more than 70 collections are now accessible to all on collections.heritage.brussels: an evolving inventory that continues to grow day by day!
