Street and Housing Block Contracts: local initiatives

In addition to the Sustainable Neighbourhood Contracts (Contrats de Quartiers Durables - CQD), Urban Renewal Contracts (Contrats de Rénovation Urbaine - CRU) and Urban Policy (Politique de la Ville - PdV), Brussels has recently introduced Street and Housing Block Contracts (Contrats d'Axe et Contrats d'Îlot - CACI).

Designed to take action on a more local scale, on one or two housing blocks or on a street, the CACIs complement regional urban policies. The aim is to make the interior of the blocks less dense and reduce impermeable surfaces, to renovate buildings and public spaces, to combat the effects of global warming, and to support productive and commercial activities, all while placing the emphasis on citizen participation, under the supervision of Urban's teams.

Temporary occupation of the "Courtrai-Ostende" CACI in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean

As part of the "Courtrai-Ostende" CACI, the temporary occupation of the building located at 47-49 Rue de Courtrai has been in full swing since spring 2024, pending the creation of the future "Jardin Vivant" (Living Garden) and a neighbourhood facility to be installed in the interior of the block (between Rue de la Carpe, Rue de Courtrai, Rue d'Ostende and Rue Vanderdussen).

It offers a wide range of cultural and social activities, including a solidarity restaurant and various events organised by the non-profit organisation Decoratelier.

The non-profit organisation La Rue has also been commissioned by the municipality, via a local branch, to involve citizen participation in the future development of the site.
