The construction site of a youth hostel on the Vieux Marché aux Grains site is still ongoing. The archaeological research conducted by the Urban team has yielded several discoveries during the archaeological monitoring of the excavations in recent weeks.
Did you know that a pier of a 12th-century Brussels city wall foundation and a section of the moat have just been uncovered on the site?
This moat, parallel to the city wall, was observed in a cross-section to a depth of one meter (and 2.5 meters lower than the base of the pier) without reaching the bottom. The blue-gray color along the edge of the moat indicates that it was historically filled with water.
