Excavations at Parking 58: Shedding new light on the origins and urban development of Brussels
In 2019, the Region carried out a preventive archaeology project on an extraordinary scale in the historic heart of the city. On the site of the former Parking 58 (now Brucity), archaeological and multi-disciplinary teams mobilised and led by Urban unearthed an exceptional repository of data illustrating the bustling environment of the medieval port of Brussels. This new issue in the Urban Research series presents the initial results of the extensive research carried out since then on a multitude of objects and samples illustrating urban life in the past, which are essential elements for understanding our Brussels regional territory and its evolution.
As a centre of expertise, reference and exchange on urban planning, urban renewal, architecture and heritage in the Brussels-Capital Region, Urban is resolutely committed to the knowledge society. The Urban Research series provides access to the results of scientific and technical studies carried out, commissioned, subsidised or supported by Urban.
Launched in 2021, this series aims to feature a selection of original and unpublished studies, in the language of their authors. These are organised under different headings, depending on the topics covered. As is the case with this second issue, the collection will in particular feature excavation reports, including those previously presented in the "Archaeology in Brussels" series.
