How do our urban planning choices shape the public spaces in which we live, work and move? As part of this special edition of Sustainability Experts Day 2026, exceptionally held as an Urban Lunch during Brussels Climate Week (12-16 October), we are delighted to welcome Marco te Brömmelstroet, Professor in Urban Mobility Futures at the University of Amsterdam and internationally known as the ‘Cycling Professor’ (Fietsprofessor).
Drawing on his expertise in urban planning, mobility and public space, he will analyse how mobility models over recent decades have shaped our cities and landscapes. What assumptions underpin the spatial choices that have led to our current infrastructure? Why is change so difficult? And how can landscape become a catalyst for sustainable transition in response to climate, social and health challenges?
This session builds on the ideas set out in the book ‘Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives’ by Marco te Brömmelstroet and Thalia Verkade, which calls for a fundamental rethink of how we design our streets, our mobility systems and our public spaces. An inspiring session for anyone looking to reflect on the future of public space and the city of tomorrow.
