Towards the decolonisation of public space: perspectives

Discover the support committee’s memorandum.

Between November 2023 and November 2025, Urban and its partners implemented the action plan "Towards the decolonisation of public space in the Brussels Capital Region" across the board.

For almost two years, the action plan has aroused keen interest among a wide and diverse audience: the Brussels municipalities, administrations and civil society as well as students and researchers in Belgium and abroad. Throughout the process, the action plan led to significant training and awareness-raising activities.

To provide a solid foundation for the implementation of the action plan, Urban’s Cultural Heritage Department has worked extensively on the identification, documentation and mapping of colonial traces.

At the same time, the committee has issued detailed advice with regard to the granting of planning permission for sites with colonial traces. This advice particularly served to draw up general recommendations andwill be used to develop a specific methodology for dealing with these permissions.

Lastly, the feasibility study for a decolonisation interpretation centre, which started in March 2025, will yield its first results in early 2026. Its results will provide an opportunity to further decolonise public space and to better combat racism and discrimination.

→ In its memorandum, the action plan’s support committee sets out the prospects for continuing this long process of decolonisation.
