On 1 July, the Pont du Jubilé was officially inaugurated and reopened to traffic after nearly two years of works.
The Pont du Jubilé has been restored in keeping with its heritage values, particularly in terms of its engineering and landscape features, while becoming a modern, safe structure that is suited to today’s various modes of transport.
Co-operation to preserve our heritage
Urban and the SNCB/NMBS teamed up to carry out and equally finance the restoration of the bridge, to the tune of 11.5 million euros, granting this neighbourhood symbol a new lease of life. Thanks to the restoration, in the frame of the transformation of the Maritime and Tour & Taxis neighbourhoods, this historical bridge can now resume its function as a true link between Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and the City of Brussels.
The structure is now under the responsibility of the Brussels Capital Region. Brussels Mobility will be responsible for its management and maintenance.
A historic bridge restored to its former glory
The Pont du Jubilé was built in 1904 and has been listed as a historic monument since 2007. It is one of the earliest examples of a steel cantilever bridge in Brussels. After having fallen into disrepair for many years, it has been restored to its former glory thanks to a meticulous restoration project, closely supervised by Urban’s Cultural Heritage Department teams.
This restoration has preserved the heritage features that define the bridge’s identity: it has been restored to its original green colour, to match with the Gare Maritime; the railings are based on its historic designs; and the new lighting reinterprets the period light fittings in a contemporary style. Furthermore, the replacement of the deck and the complete refurbishment of the structure will ensure the long-term viability of this century-old structure for generations to come.
Thanks to the restoration, the Pont du Jubilé now also fully addresses today’s sustainable mobility challenges.
A safer and more accessible connection
In addition to restoring the bridge’s distinctive features, the project significantly improves the safety, comfort and accessibility of this strategic link.
Each mode of transport now has its own dedicated space: two-way car traffic has been restored, while separate, safe cycle paths and wider footpaths, completed with benches, make it easier to travel from one side to the other.
This way, the Pont du Jubilé is again becoming a key link in Brussels’ transport network, bringing residents closer together and serving as a new gateway to Tour & Taxis Park.
This restoration illustrates the commitment of Urban and of the Brussels Capital Region to preserving heritage while adapting it to the uses and challenges of the city of tomorrow.
