Discover the programme for the coming months at LAB·AN

First anniversary for LAB·AN

LAB·AN, which was founded by Urban and its partners in the frame of the Art Nouveau year 2023, is an Art Nouveau promotion area, offering a contemporary take on this Belgian, Brussels and international cultural heritage and all the themes it encompasses. It is housed in the Hôtel van Eetvelde, one of Victor Horta’s finest creations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

LAB·AN (Laboratory of Art Nouveau) celebrated its first anniversary in May 2024, having attracted more than 25,000 visitors after having opened its doors to the public for a year. To mark this occasion, Urban invites you to (re)visit the site and to discover the programme for the coming months!

Exhibition « A Sore Calamity », by Max Pinckers & Victoria Gonzalez-Figueras

Taking as their starting point the interweaving of Art Nouveau and colonialism, Max Pinckers and Victoria Gonzalez-Figueras offer a photo exhibition inspired by Mark Twain’s pamphlet « King Leopold’s Soliloquy ». Accompanied by the sonic work « Soliloquy in Edmond’s Office », conceived with Wiet Lengeler, the installation can be seen in Edmond van Eetvelde’s former billiard room until the end of December 2024.

Installation « IN THE WIND BLOW THEIR STORIES »

In black letters on a white flag, hoisted on the mast in front of the building’s façade, « IN THE WIND BLOW THEIR STORIES » is an invitation to listen to the stories that drift by, carried by the wind, from one generation to the next. It is more precisely the history of the Hôtel van Eetvelde that the work of artist Laure Prouvost is questioning. Behind its sumptuous Art Nouveau façade hide various stories linked to Belgium’s colonial heritage, for those who take the time to listen to them. All of these stories, complex as they are, contribute to the construction of our collective memory.

This work was commissioned as part of the Art Nouveau Year 2023, supported by the Brussels government and led by urban.brussels, under the general coordination of curator Paul Dujardin. It is also part of the action plan « Decolonising public spaces in the Brussels-Capital Region ».

Immersive experience « Ups & Downs » + « Aubecq: Fragments »

The « Ups & Downs » space is built around an interactive device that allows visitors to discover the Art Nouveau architectural developments in Belgium, their unfortunate destruction and their preservation as well as their reconstruction thanks to digital tools.

The exhibition « Aubecq: Fragments » is an immersive experience of one of Victor Horta’s major creations: the Hôtel Aubecq. In addition to the film “Aubecq: Fragments”, conceived by Benoît Lemmens and Gaspard Giersé, the exhibition takes the public on the trail of the Hôtel Aubecq and the 600 stones of its façade that were saved at the last minute when the building was demolished and that were then transported from sheds to wastelands for almost 70 years. Fragments are all that remains of this building: part of its façade, a few plans and rare black and white photos. The film is a free interpretation, based on the available archive material, in an attempt to breathe new life into this masterpiece, which was destroyed in 1950.
