The Action Plan
In May 2023, the government of the Brussels Capital Region approved an action plan called “Towards the decolonisation of public space in the Brussels Capital Region”. Urban is responsible for its implementation.

Participation
Participation is at the heart of the decolonisation action plan. This democratic participatory process of public debate is aimed at both the population of the Brussels Capital Region and various groups of actors with an interest in critically questioning colonial representation in the public space.
Questions & Answers
Because decolonisation is a long and demanding process, it requires the sharing of concepts, vocabulary and knowledge from social and human sciences.

Urban is piloting the action plan “Towards the decolonisation of public space in the Brussels Capital Region”
In 2024 and 2025, Urban will be piloting the implementation of the action plan Towards the decolonisation of public space in the Brussels Capital Region, which was approved by the government of the Brussels Capital Region in May 2023.

L’espace public est chargé de références à l’histoire et les traces symboliques (fresques, statues, monuments, etc.) qui valorisent notamment le pouvoir colonial. Ces représentations symboliques établissent des échelles de valeur et des hiérarchies de pouvoir au sein de l’espace public et promeuvent des stéréotypes raciaux. Urban s’est engagé à remédier à cette situation et œuvre à la mise en place d’un espace public plus inclusif.
Entre 2020 et 2022, une groupe de travail constitué par Urban a été chargé d’élaborer des recommandations pour la décolonisation de l’espace public. La synthèse des travaux a donné lieu à un rapport publié en février 2022. Sur base de ces recommandations, un plan d’action "Vers la décolonisation de l’espace public en Région de Bruxelles-Capitale" a été validé par le gouvernement en mai 2023. Urban est chargée de sa mise en œuvre en collaboration avec une série d’institutions et administrations partenaires.
